COVID

TestingVaccines

Who to test:

  • Anyone who has symptoms (fever, cough, SOB, fatigue, chills, muscle pain/body aches, new loss of taste or smell, nausea or vomiting, diarrhea, congested or runny nose, and/or sore throat.
  • People who had a (+) COVID contact or any concern of possible exposure – not testing here, pts will need to go to Water World, JeffCo Stadium or other testing site.
    • (+) exposure = exposure within 6 ft of someone with COVID for >15 mins).

Patients with positive EXPOSURE/CONTACT:

  • Test 5 days or more after exposure. If this is negative then quarantine for 7 days, and as long as no symptoms develop, then cleared to return to public.  ALTERNATIVE is to quarantine for 10 days following exposure (no testing done), and as long as no symptoms develop in that time, then cleared to return to public.
    • If (+) contact is a household contact – quarantine starts from the day after the (+) contact isolates themselves OR when their isolation ends (if unable to isolate from household contacts)

If you tests POSITIVE:

  • Isolate: stay home, separate themselves from others. Ideally your own bathroom and bedroom if possible. Have someone bring meals to your door, masking, frequent hand washing, etc. frequent washing/sanitization of “high-touch” surfaces daily (phone, remote, door knobs, toilet handles, etc).
  • Stop isolation when you are both 10 days after onset of symptoms AND fever-free for at least 24hrs without medications and symptoms have significantly improved.
  • If you are (+) but DO NOT HAVE SYMPTOMS: stop isolation after 10 days since (+) test and NO COVID symptoms developed since test.
  • No repeat testing needed (people may stay positive long after they aren’t contagious)

If results are NEGATIVE for COVID-19 and patient DOES have symptoms:

  • Patient can go to UCHealth or another testing facility for a 2nd test at least 24hrs after initial test. If 2nd test is negative, then it is highly likely that they have some other viral illness and they can come out of isolation and family can stop quarantining.
  • If they opt-out of a 2nd test, then proceed as though they had a false-negative and continue w/ isolation guidelines as above (isolate until both 10 days after onset of symptoms AND fever-free for at least 24hrs without medications and symptoms have improved).

Patients with positive EXPOSURE/CONTACT who do not have symptoms:

  • Test #1 3-5 days after exposure. If first test is negative, perform 2nd test 7-10 days after exposure.
  • Quarantine for 14 days from exposure, even if both PCR tests are negative.
    • This starts from 14 days after the (+) contact isolates if they are household members.

Re-exposure AFTER testing positive:

  • Don’t re-test a person with a (+) exposure if they themselves were positive within the past 3 months, but needs to quarantine for 14 days.

When to go to the ER:

  • If temperature remains > 103, despite fever-reducing medications (see below).
  • O2 saturation < 90% on room air.
  • Chest pain, shortness of breath, confusion.

Fever reducing medications (ADULT):

  • Ibuprofen 800mg every 8hrs with food
  • Acetaminophen (Tylenol) 1,000mg every 8hrs
  • Okay to take at the same time -OR- alternate between the two every 4 hrs; i.e. Ibuprofen 800mg at noon, acetaminophen 1,000mg at 4pm, ibuprofen 800mg at 8pm, etc.

Antibody testing:

  • It takes about 2 weeks after symptoms appear to detect antibodies. Levels peak at about three to four weeks and then drop over time.
  • It is not yet known if antibodies from COVID-19 infections provide immunity against a future infection.

We have applied to be a distributor of the Moderna vaccine, but we don’t know if or when we will receive it. We will update this information as we receive new information. In the meantime, if your Phase is called to get the vaccine, please contact your local pharmacies and the Health Department.
